I don't know that I can see Plantinga as Bombadil until I've heard him sing…

    Excellent point!

Mordor? Good heavens. This scientific naturalism is the whole story that we have from working our way up from the data in rigorous fashion. That is why it is such a consensus, and why it has the name science attached to it. It makes sense, and doesn't go beyond what can be reasonably supported. It is not complete, but that doesn't make it false. Sorry that you don't like it.

Now, if you (or Nagel, et al..) want to go beyond that (or counter to it) with fairy stories about what it all means, what is going on behind the curtain, what the bearded sky-god likes to hear about, etc., go ahead. But you will not be doing so with either philosophic or scientific justification.. they are pure fantasies.

These fantasies, patterned on the oldest levels of our psychology, may turn out to be true… anything is possible. But the likelihood is awfully slim.

And honestly, to see all this intelligent design garbage trotted out for the upteenth time (the linked review) is appalling.. will this meme never die? It is an area where we need better theories, not worse ones.

Incidentally, if you want to hear an intelligent discussion about the emergence of consciousness, I am just getting around to Gödel,Escher,Bach, quite belatedly(!), and recommend it, for selective reading.
